wide open spaces

yesterday was a good day. a great day actually. thanks for asking. we started the day with donuts and coffee with friends then a trip to the park. we were the only ones there and it seemed that all that wide open space was just what she {we} needed. and of course a little sunshine to make you feel alive...

she was asking if we could come back again soon before we even left. and i agreed.
you know what the song says about wide open spaces right? there's room to make mistakes. which is good for both of us. i have a feeling we'll be back often.

enjoy your thursday. i'm thinking it's a zoo day for us. love from bham....

a different category...

most of the posts here are about the good, the great and the even better in our world. and that is the way i intend it to be. it's a blog after all. an online scrapbook. and to be frank most of our days are great. most of them. today however falls into a different category. today was of the not-so-great sort.

georgia's been up since 6 sharp. it started early. she refused breakfast and a nap. she's bitten me, harold and her croc. thrown her food and thrown a fit. opened every drawer, every cabinet and every closet finding nothing to her liking. played inside, outside and even beside a friend. climbed on chairs, over the crib and up my nerves. and all this was before lunch.

this has been the textbook day of an overwhelmed parent. and as 6 o'clock rolled around tonight i watched the clock till it was time for harold to take georgia to bed. i wanted a break. and when i sat alone on the couch catching my breath for the first time, i was faced with the fact that while i long for a moment alone after days like today, i have a Savior who never 'takes a break' from shepherding His flock no matter how stubborn or not-so-great they might be. with patience and love and grace beyond measure, He so gently cares for his own.

i want to be that kind of parent. i am far from it. but not so far with His strength. i didn't stop today to ask for more patience. or gentleness. or love. or wisdom to parent georgia. i have before, but today i failed her. so tonight as i close this day, i am going to ask for another day like today. for another not-so-great day so that i can feel the strength of Christ in the way i raise my daughter.

the forecast for tomorrow is partly cloudy. but i'm calling it partly sunny. and no matter what, it will be a great day. just wait and see :)

"Those who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
Isaiah 40:31

opinion needed...

georgia starts mother's day out next week {which is a whole 'nother blog post} and one of the things mentioned in the policy book is that all children must feed themselves. so all food needs to be cut/sliced or able to be handled by child with minimal messes. so i decided to start working on letting georgia feed herself with a spoon...

do you think this falls under the minimal mess category? i was hoping to send yogurt.

S.O.S.

last weekend i went to a near-by neighborhood to check out a yard sale. $20 later this was in our back yard...

and we haven't been inside since. i did manage to get her 10 feet away to swing but that was it...

i'm starting to get a little hungry out here. i asked if we could go in anytime soon and she started laughing hysterically...

maybe you could send help?!

where the rubber meets the road...

I've read recently it stated in relationship to child-rearing that you aren't raising a 'child' but raising an adult. One who you would hope to be a decent citizen of this world in which we live. And so your 'rearing' should bear that in mind as you teach and discipline and so forth. I agree with that. But for us, more importantly is the fact that we are raising a citizen of Heaven. And so my job is to 'keep my mind set on the things above where Christ is' {colossians 3:2} and while that is very easy to type in a blog post, the daily living and teaching of that is where the rubber meets the road. Or where my child meets with Jesus. So I'm on a quest to make that a little easier for her and me. She has to learn her shapes. She has to learn numbers. colors. animals. letters. and so on. and so on.

So...we're starting with shapes at our house. What they are AND how the Bible includes them as well. I made some flashcards and decided to document the steps for you as well. Don't get overwhelmed by this task. It's simple. Get overwhelmed by the fact that you have to 'rightly handle the Word of Truth' {2 Timothy 2:15} to your child...but not this craft :)

Step 1: Get some 8.5" x 11" cardstock

Step 2: Cut to 4"x6" pieces

Step 3: Open microsoft word and change the paper size to 4"x6". Then center your cursor and create the shape using the 'autoshapes' option at the bottom of screen. Create your shape. Type the shape's name. Then find a scripture that relates to the shape.
*if you need help with this step, contact me. i'll be happy to help*

Step 4: Print the items on the 4"x6" pieces

Step 5: Buy some coordinating scrapbook paper to layer the flashcards on. Then cut the patterned paper to a 5"x7" size.

Step 7: Layer the two pieces with double-sided tape to prevent slipping when laminating.

Step 8: Don't throw away the scraps. We'll use those later :)

Step 9: Take the flashcards to Kinkos {or any print shop} and have them laminate the pieces. Then simply cut them out leaving a 1/4 inch border around the flashcard.

Step 10: Use them. Use them often. Let little hands find them easily. Make several sets if you will that they may be found everywhere.

There are endless ways to impart of the Word of God to our children. And while this is one way that I have chosen, yours may be different and that is okay. However, the charge to you is the same if you are follower of Christ...

Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that's in you, love him with all you've got! Write these commandments that I've given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.
Deuteronomy 6:5-8 {The Message}

So get busy. Here's to lots of little 'Heavenly Citizens' running around this ole' world....

for Harold {and the rest of you}

hey babe...you know these pictures on the wall???

georgia kept wanting me to hold her so she could say 'hey dada' to your picture. everytime i put her back down, she said up...up...up...dada...dada...dada so i told her that you were at work and that was only a picture and she got upset.

so i took the picture off the wall {because you know how quick 25lbs gets too heavy} so she could see it and she snatched it out of my hands and onto the ground...

so she could have you all to herself and give you lots of love.

i imagine she's ready to see you. have a good day. and i love you too.
